How I work with Clients

Therapists love to ask other therapists: “What kind of a therapist are you?”  We come in many different flavors.  When discussing this with other therapists I throw out words like: systemic, existential, experiential, strategic, and structural.  This won’t mean much to most people and I doubt many clients really care about these labels.

Here’s what you get when you come in to see me:  Genuineness, Honesty, and Respect.     I’m going to be genuine.  This means that what you see is what you get with me.  You get a real person; my insight and compassion as well as my frailty and fallibility.  I’m also going to be honest with you.  We have to be able to be honest if we’re going to get real change.  I’m going to ask you to be honest as well.  And, of course, you will get respect.  We may not agree on everything, but we’ll do our best to make it respectful disagreement.  We all make mistakes and I’m not going to judge you for yours.  I make these things priority in my work because I believe that it is genuine, intimate relationships that bring about change and healing.

Much of my experience is with teens, pre-teens, and young adults.  I think that adolescence and young adulthood are especially frustrating and challenging time of life and most of us could use a little help through them.  I help young people with issues such as anger, mood, anxiety, and relational conflict.

I heavily favor relational therapies.  This means family and couple’s work.  As I stated above, it is through our relationships that change and healing happen and I will likely suggest that we do at least some relational work over the course of therapy. Conflict is normal in relationships, but sometimes our relationships aren’t like we want them to be.

I specialize in helping young people, families, and couples, but I am open to see anyone who has an open mind and a sense of humor.
